Major League Soccer Transfer News: Antonio Carlos Moves to Fluminense

Orlando City SC Bids Farewell to Defender

On December 31, 2023, Major League Soccer (MLS) club Orlando City SC announced the transfer of defender Antonio Carlos to Brazilian club Fluminense. The move marks the end of a successful three-year spell for the Brazilian center-back in the MLS.

Carlos' Orlando City Career

Antonio Carlos joined Orlando City SC from Palmeiras in 2020. He quickly established himself as a key player for the MLS side, making over 100 appearances and helping the team reach the US Open Cup final in 2022. Carlos's consistent performances and leadership on and off the field earned him a reputation as one of the best defenders in MLS.

Despite his success in Orlando, Carlos expressed his desire to return to Brazil and reunite with his former club, Fluminense. The transfer was finalized on January 15, 2023.

Return to Fluminense

Antonio Carlos returns to Fluminense, where he began his professional career. He played for the Brazilian club from 2013 to 2017, winning the Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro State Championship) in 2016 and 2017. Carlos is expected to play a significant role for Fluminense as they aim to reclaim their Serie A title and challenge for continental honors.

Orlando City's Future

While Orlando City SC will miss Antonio Carlos's presence, the club is confident in its ability to fill the void left by his departure. The team has brought in several new signings in the offseason, including defender Robin Jansson from Brentford FC. Orlando City SC will look to challenge for the MLS Cup in 2023 and make a run in the CONCACAF Champions League.
