Arizona Coyotes Relocation

Hockey Homecoming: Arizona Coyotes Relocate to Salt Lake City

A New Era Begins

The Arizona Coyotes have officially moved to Salt Lake City, marking a new chapter for the franchise and a return to the city where it all began. The move, which was approved by the NHL Board of Governors on April 18, 2024, brings the Coyotes back to Utah for the first time since 1996 when they relocated to Phoenix.

A Tumultuous Past

The Coyotes' tenure in Arizona was marked by controversy and financial instability. The team played more than half of its 27 seasons in Phoenix under some form of financial cloud, including bankruptcy proceedings and loan defaults by owners. Despite the challenges, the Coyotes made the playoffs nine times during their time in Arizona, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2012.

However, relocation speculation has followed the Coyotes for years due to issues surrounding a permanent arena solution. The team played its home games at Mullett Arena, a temporary facility that was not suitable for an NHL team in the long-term. Fans and players alike have been eagerly awaiting a new arena, and the move to Salt Lake City provides a fresh start for the franchise.

A Bright Future

The Coyotes are expected to play their home games at the new Vivint Arena, home to the Utah Jazz NBA team. The state-of-the-art facility will provide the team with a modern and comfortable home.

The relocation also brings the Coyotes closer to their fan base in Utah. Many fans from the original Utah Grizzlies franchise, which played in the International Hockey League from 1995 to 2005, are expected to return to support the Coyotes. The team is also hoping to attract new fans in Salt Lake City, where hockey is a growing sport.

The move to Salt Lake City is a new chapter for the Arizona Coyotes. After years of uncertainty and financial turmoil, the team has found a new home where it can build a successful future.
